White oak wood is dense, dent resistant and beautiful. The color is consistent across batches as long as Eastern North American wood is used.
The trees grow both tall and girthy, so quarter and rift sawn boards are readily available. Quarter sawn white oak is prized for large "flecks" caused by medullary rays. They are chatoyant and give any sign or design element an authentic and organic feel. However, many current designers may not like the uncontrolled feeling and inherent inconsistency of quarter sawn oak. In these situations, just specify rift sawn.
White oak can chip easily and is more prone to cupping than you might think at first. For this reason we recommend never going under 0.5" thickness unless the element is quite small ~ under 7 square inches ~ and planning on 0.75" thickness for anything over roughly 35 square inches. Also consider noting that chips on the edge must be minimized or not allowed at all to prevent your design from suffering from standard craftsmanship.
